Church History

In 1985, the chapel of the Salesian Training Institute [STI] was officially declared as a mass centre to serve the parishioners of the Holy Cross parish who lived in the D’Souza Colony, Gangapur Road area. On 16th June 1991, this Mass Centre was given the status of a parish and officially entrusted to the care of the Salesians by Bp. Thomas Bhalerao sj. Fr. Longinus Nazareth was appointed the first parish priest, with Fr. Kenneth Pereira appointed as his assistant. The parish was named “Don Bosco Parish” and it was run initially from STI with the novitiate chapel being used for liturgical services. With the establishment of the new parish, a small room at Anand Colony, Satpur that served as a Mass Centre was also entrusted to the Salesians.

With the passage of time the need was felt to set up a separate parish community that would take up responsibility for the care of the parishioners both in the immediate neighborhood and in the Satpur area. In 1996 work began to build two buildings in the vacant plot of land opposite STI, one for a school and another to host the parish. In keeping with the thinking at that time instead of building a separate parish church, a community hall was built that would serve both as a prayer hall for liturgical services of the parish and as a school hall.

However, when the community was eventually established it was entrusted with a triple responsibility: [1] To take care of the parishioners both in the neighbourhood and in the Satpur area. [2] to run the school [3] to serve as a formation community catering to clerics doing their college studies in the various colleges of the neighbourhood.

Over the years a Community Hall was build at Satpur since the little room that served as a mass centre was found to be woefully inadequate for the increasing numbers of parishioners in the Satpur area. This mass centre is named Dominic Savio Church and is six kms away from Don Bosco Marg where the Salesian Community is based.

A few years ago some of the parishioners and the priests serving the parish felt the need for a new parish church. Permission was granted for the collection of funds. By God’s grace the church was completed and inaugurated on 11th April 2021 on Divine Mercy Sunday by Bishop of Nashik Lourdes Daniel.

Whatever you do, think of the Glory of God as your main goal.
